Two Army Rangers have died by suicide at Hunter Army Airfield since the end of July | Task and Purpose

Must Read

Three US Army Rangers from the 1st Ranger Battalion have passed away since the end of July while serving at Georgia’s Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield.

Officials have established that two deaths were caused by suicide. The third fatality this month has an unclear cause at this time. The oldest was 26-year-old Charles Brucker Tafel. He committed suicide on July 31. On October 2, Michael James Avila committed suicide. The day before, he had celebrated turning 21. Both Tafel and Avila died on the base. Four days after Avila on October 6, Spc William “Willy” Borgensen was the most recent Ranger from the 1st Ranger Battalion to pass away. The three investigations regarding the killings of the Rangers are all still active. Two of the deaths occurred on-base at Hunter Army Airfield outside Savannah, Georgia, and were confirmed as suicides by The Current, a nonprofit news organization in Georgia that broke the story first.
