Transfer of Green Berets, SEALs to Army base in Germany questioned in House funding bill | Stripes

Must Read

U.S. Green Berets and SEALs have been requested to go to an Army base in Baumholder, Germany, by Special Operations Command Europe.

A number of construction projects are currently underway, and hundreds of soldiers are scheduled to transfer from their existing base of operations in Stuttgart. However, House members seek to stop money for building projects to back the initiative, arguing that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin must first provide justification for it. The House’s draft of the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act specifically asks Austin to justify why American special operators wouldn’t be better placed in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Romania, or Poland, all of which are on the front lines with the enemy. In July, the NDAA’s House version was approved. It will eventually be reconciled with the Senate’s version of the bill, which excludes the waiver clause and hasn’t been put to a vote yet.
