In the 1960’s, The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik, igniting the Space Race.
Within just a couple years, technology had evolved exponentially, and governments around the world began looking at what might be possible, from a rather fantastical perspective. A since declassified report from 1965: “The Meanderings of a Weapon Oriented Mind When Applied in a Vacuum Such as the Moon” shows that the US army looked at the possibility of fielding a space force on the moon, and ventured into what kind of weapons would be needed in the vacuum of space. The Army recognized that traditional weapons would likely be useless, as the lack of gravity would send soldiers flying from recoil. The Army did look at the possibility of laser-weapons, but decided that the technology needed was still decades away. The Army settled on the possibility of using pre-loaded dart guns, spring-loaded sphere shooters and “sausage” guns that could fire high pressured gas at close ranges.
