The US has funneled more than $1 billion into Afghanistan since the fall of Kabul with zero accountability | Task and Purpose

Must Read

Since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021, the U.S. government has sent more than $1.1 billion in taxpayer money with little oversight or accountability, according to the watchdog charged with monitoring American-led reconstruction operations.

According to a recent report from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), the watchdog is unable to “provide Congress and the American people with a full accounting of this U.S. government spending due to the non-cooperation of several U.S. government agencies” for the first time since it was founded in 2008. These organizations include the Treasury Department and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), both of which “refused to assist with SIGAR in any capacity.” There, finances are still managed by the State Department, which only provided “high-level funding data but not details of agency-supported activities.” According to the report, “A State official advised SIGAR that department workers had received internal guidance to not contact with or communicate to SIGAR without prior authorization from State legal counsel. The State Department and USAID reportedly “refused” to provide the watchdog with crucial “information and assistance” for several congressionally-mandated reviews and audits, despite having freely provided pertinent information for over ten years.

  1. Thanks to those Americans that served, bled, and died in Afghanistan. And to those who continue to suffer . God bless them all.
Our government has let a whole generation down, and continues to do their business “in the dark”.
It is small wonder people do not trust Washington.
