The Truth Behind the Mysterious M1903 Service Rifle | Sandboxx

Must Read

The name “air service rifle” was the only clue about this odd rifle, leading to numerous theories about its use, including for balloon observers to take shots at enemy planes.

However, it was tough to hit a plane with a bolt-action rifle from a balloon platform due to wind sway and fast-moving planes. Another theory was that it was designed for downed pilots, given its lighter, less bulky design with a larger magazine to make up for the fact that they couldn’t carry a cartridge belt. The third theory suggested it was used for plane-to-plane combat, which seems unlikely, given that machine guns were already mounted on planes by the time this weapon was made. None of these theories have been conclusively proven. Most of these rifles were destroyed or refitted into standard M1903s after World War I.
