Sounded like typing on a typewriter in the distance throughout south-side Chicago, it was given the nickname “Chicago Typewriter.” 

Two Thompsons were used to fire 70 bullets at seven Moran Gang members in a Chicago parking garage during the notorious 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. But Thompson’s influence went back more than ten years before this horrific incident. The small weapons expert and US Army soldier John Taliaferro Thompson saw the impasse in the trench combat on the Western Front.
