The controversial Scorpions force was under the direction of the Serbian Interior Ministry throughout the Yugoslav Wars, according to witnesses who testified before the Hague Tribunal.
One of the most notorious crimes of the Bosnian War was carried out by The Scorpions. According to documents found in the ICTY’s archives, the Scorpions unit, whose members committed war crimes during the wars of the 1990s, was a division of the Serbian Interior Ministry. However, a number of judgments rendered by Serbian courts, the ICTY, and the International Court of Justice in The Hague concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support the finding that the Scorpions unit was associated with Serbian official institutions. The details of the Scorpions unit’s status and Vasilije Mijovic’s alleged leadership role in the Trnovo operation have remained unclear even since The Hague and Belgrade decisions. However, a significant court decision that is upcoming may offer more clarification.
