The Candy Maker, The Cop, and The Fireman Fighting America’s Shadow War | Rolling Stone

Must Read

For the past four months, citizen soldiers have been training EFON (1st Expeditionary Force of Niger) forces to combat the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), and offshoot the internationally known ISIS, who terrorized Iraq and Syria in the past.

Though listed as Citizen Soldiers on paper, almost all the men in the National Guard’s 20th Special Forces Group have active-duty combat experience fighting in Afghanistan. Majority of their time is spent training, advising and rehearsing. The Team of Americans rarely leave the base, a bittersweet feeling for many of them, as they desire to witness the effectiveness of the troops they trained. French paratroopers accompany the Nigerians as they brave toward dangerous territory, but the American Soldiers use satellites and tablets to view remotely. The soldiers are there to maintain a marginal level of stability among the extremist threat, but without adequate resources, eliminating the root cause is impossible.
