After unintentionally adopting the name of an unrelated existing weapon, the Army has decided to change the name of its new rifle, the service revealed on Wednesday.
The future M5 from Sig Sauer for the military will now be known as the M7 after it was found that Colt Industries also produces a weapon by the same name. The M250 squad automatic weapon, or light machine gun, will not replace the M249 SAW. Since the Army is still testing the weapons, it is unknown how far they can accurately engage targets. However, it will take about ten years before the M7 or M250 appear in most formations.
