The Next Generation Air Dominance Fighter Program of the Air Force is the future of air combat. It’s a daring plan that will secure the Air Force’s place in the sky for decades.

The critical engineering and production phase of the Next Generation Air Dominance aircraft program has begun. The NGAD initiative is envisioned as a “family of systems” with many components. Typically, the Air Force requires about seven years to achieve its first operational capability. NGAD may potentially be the costliest aircraft program in history. The Air Force has requested about $1.7 billion from Congress for NGAD, including $133 million for research, development, testing, and evaluation.

Under the proposal, each human-crewed aircraft would likely cost several hundred million dollars. Kendall: “I am uninterested in demonstrations and experiments unless they are an essential step to actual competence.” He also said that he wants the Air Force’s purchase projects to get to production more swiftly.
