India has a steady policy of supporting a sovereign, democratic, and peaceful Afghanistan where the interests of all segments of Afghan society, including women, children, and minorities, are protected as a contiguous neighbor and strategic partner.
India backs any peace measures that aim for a comprehensive Afghan-led political settlement with enduring results. India has developed solid ties with the Afghan people over the years, as well as with other regional countries like Iran, Uzbekistan, and Qatar, all of which are important for defending India’s interests in Afghanistan. But for the time being, India’s only course of action is to wait and see what transpires in Afghanistan. Since the Taliban cannot be trusted, the government must make a difficult choice over whether to proceed with recognizing the Taliban government.
