On Sunday, a flagship Royal Thai Navy cruiser sank amid huge seas and high winds, leaving hundreds of sailors missing on Monday.
More than 100 sailors were rescued on Sunday evening from the HTMS Sukhothai, one of only seven naval corvettes, after heavy winds caused the boat to tip dramatically toward the water, according to navy spokesperson Pokkrong Monthatphalin. At the time, the warship was patrolling around 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Bang Saphan District in central Thailand. Storms were expected in the Gulf of Thailand, and ferry services were canceled after meteorologists predicted high waves and heavy rain on Sunday and Monday.
