Talking the Talk: Language Capabilities for the U.S. Army Special Forces | War on the Rocks

Must Read

Green Berets are taught how to communicate in a foreign language at the Special Forces Language Lab.

Most Green Berets are not native speakers of the language allocated to them during the Special Forces Qualification Course. For 60 years, language instruction has been an integral part of Special Forces training. Following the 9/11 attacks, Special Forces were deployed continuously for the following two decades. Each group is now equipped with a state-of-the-art language facility staffed by teachers. Language abilities are one of the most critical assets a Green Beret has for deployment success.

Due to the 5th Group’s duty for the Middle East, it needed to train in Arabic. Green Berets trained in Serbo-Croatian back in 2011 might still be found in the 10th Group. To further develop this competence, Special Forces commanders are urged to continue to recruit competent native speakers.
