A Taiwanese television news program stated incorrectly that China had begun an invasion close outside the capital Taipei, sparking outrage online. A few hours later, the station issued an on-air apology, claiming that the chyron was created for a disaster awareness film but was accidentally aired due to a production mistake. CTS subsequently launched an inquiry into what it described as “extreme carelessness,” promising to discipline any employees found to be at fault.
Although there is no indication of an impending invasion, Beijing has increased its military, political, and economic pressure on Taipei in recent years. China has also often chastised Taiwan for strengthening relations with the United States.
