Special operations want to build AI systems that can assess public mood more accurately than before. They seek to elevate American influence operations above those of China and Russia. General Richard Clark: “I still do not believe we have all the necessary tools, and we must continue to enhance our speed.” Sentiment analysis is not new, but it has grown in recent years due to the creation of data sets that represent the public’s mood through social media. “We must be able to communicate and counter-message in this environment with the same speed and scope as our enemies,” says SOCOM head James Smith.

Davids asserts that Russia is engaged in disinformation campaigns in Latin America and South America. He believes that sentiment monitoring will be crucial for assisting special operations in gauging their performance compared to China and Russia.
