Following a siege by pro-government forces, a city has been transformed into a war zone.
Tuesday morning before dawn, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was evacuated from his residence in Colombo by Special Forces shooting into the air. Hundreds of military personnel fired tear gas and warning shots to repel anti-government protestors as they transported him and his family to an unidentified safe house.
A severe cost-of-living inflation precipitated the country’s descent into anarchy. On Monday, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa bussed in thousands of supposed pro-government supporters from throughout Sri Lanka for a protest. Armed with iron bars and clubs, the mob attacked and injured 200 nonviolent anti-government protesters at Colombo’s Galle Face demonstration location. The Rajappaksa family freed detainees from Watareka Jail, an open-air prison camp in western Sri Lanka, for the day, with the intent of scaring away and brutalizing protesters of their rule.
