In Somalia, Special forces and allied militias have retaken control of a key town that the al-Shabab armed group had held for six years.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said in a televised address on Tuesday that pro-government forces entered the village of Adan Yabal in Hirshabelle, approximately 220 kilometers northeast of the capital Mogadishu after the al-Qaeda-affiliated rebels fled without resistance. With the aid of American airstrikes and chopper support from an African Union (AU) force, ATMIS, the army and local clan militias known as “Macawisley” have recently retaken large portions of the central states of Galmudug and Hirshabelle. According to ATMIS, al-Shabab used Adan Yabal as a base of operations.
