When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, a young couple Julia and Roma witnessed the outbreak of panic in their southern city of Kherson.
Supplies of food and medicine were swiftly depleted, and cancer patients—including Yulia’s grandfather—died for lack of necessary medications. The couple coordinated supplies from friends and family to distribute food and medicine to those in need throughout the city. Roma and Yulia were among those who participated in the Ukrainian army’s ground operations in Kherson over the months that followed to work against Russian domination there. Roma remained silent about his service to the Ukrainian resistance despite being subjected to torture. After being arrested, Roma and Yulia relocated to escape being asked to participate in the fake referendum that Russia organized in late September.
