The United States Special Operations Command pushes information to the limit.
The Special Operations Command of the United States is currently building an information technology architecture and operational strategy. The development and deployment of successful special operations digital systems may directly impact departmental military systems. In Ukraine, some of the command’s adaptable and robust approaches to information at the edge have already yielded fruit. According to Col. Joe Pishock, the USA head of networks and services for the US Special Operations Command, the SOCOM J-6 has achieved the minimum viable product necessary for deployment.
SOCOM’s mission command needs to span the area, from space to the deep sea, making its job genuinely collaborative. Each level of knowledge has access to the same authoritative data, and the edge will have the same data as higher-level commanders. The cloud will play a more significant role in SOCOM operations in the future, and the command is adapting its activities accordingly. “We’re attempting to create a hybrid environment where only the signal people understand where, when, and how this is conveyed,” Col. Weizer said. A well-constructed cloud data center enables analytics, which aids in the modernization of on-premise facilities.
Among the SOF-unique capabilities would be using commercial telecommunications networks during deployment. SOCOM may use various procurement strategies following the Defense Department’s Adaptive Acquisition Framework. The command can use pre-existing high-level needs, such as situational awareness. While providers will never be able to move at speed desired by warfighters, SOCOM maintains daily contact with the operating force. According to Col. Weizer, SOF has evolved away from a relationship defined by friction between the acquisition and user communities.
He says that the present procedure satisfies their demands quickly, which has boosted confidence. Integrating AI and machine learning into SOF systems will be challenging because of the lack of well-defined versions of these technologies.
