Border Patrol Tactical Unit agents (BORTAC) entered the Uvalde primary school and neutralized the school gunman as massive communication failures rendered local police useless. It is reported that BORTAC agents disregarded an order to wait from local police after held back for 30 minutes.
The elite force was established in 1984 in reaction to riots at immigrant detention centers and has reacted to threats both domestically and internationally. A BORTAC agent told The Daily Caller News Foundation that agents saw themselves as “silent pros,” and preferred little exposure regarding their tactics.
BORTAC agents receive comprehensive training from SOF veterans and are selected after a series of tolling physical and mental tests. According to a spokeswoman, the company Northern Red, a business that provides tactical training, presumably taught some of the agents that reacted in Uvalde. The last activity with Northern Red subject matter specialists was in 2017, owing to financing constraints, according to the BORTAC agent.
The agent continued, “It’s been difficult for us since our financial condition has been challenging.” According to Texas Monthly, the Border Patrol’s elite BORTAC agents are trained to react to cartel violence and examine stash homes. The special agents have assisted international military operations, including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. An agent told The Daily Caller, “We don’t like the publicity; we want to keep our strategies under wraps.”
