The US State Department initially condemned the murder Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, and urged an US investigation. However, a week later, a spokesperson for the US State department has concluded that they trust Israel to complete an independent investigation. It is widely to believed that Shireen was shot by Israel Defense Forces while covering the recent clashes between Israel and Palestine. A Palestinian advocate for human rights asserts that requests for inquiries are “empty gestures” if left to Israel. An Arab-American rights organization has demanded an independent probe into the January assassination of an American by Israeli soldiers. After being unjustly imprisoned, shackled, blinded, and gagged, 78-year-old Omar Assad had a heart attack from stress. In February, the Israeli military described the event as a “manifest lack of moral judgment” and ordered disciplinary action against the participating unit, but no criminal charges. The execution of Abu Akleh was a “targeted assassination,” according to Amer Zahr, head of the advocacy organization New Generation for Palestine.
