Marvin Glen Shields, the first and only Seabee to receive the Medal of Honor, was honored by the Seabees on Tuesday. The Chief Petty Officer Initiation Season now includes a recreation of Shields’ exploits while stationed with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 11. On June 10, 1965, the Viet Cong attacked the special forces unit to which Shields was attached. Even being injured twice, Shields assisted in the transportation of others who were more seriously injured to medical care. In the re-enactment, Chief Perry Officer Select Darrell Winchester of NMCB 11 played Shields. Shields soon went for an operation to take out an opposing gun post during the battle. Shields was fatally shot after taking down the enemy rifle.
