The Greater London area’s police force, the Metropolitan Police Force, has a gun division called the Specialist Firearms Command (SCO19).
Metropolitan police officers undergo more training than their regular counterparts and are always on call, ready to respond at a moment’s notice to any firearms incident in London. SCO19 is a part of the 38 specialized intervention teams from 28 countries that make up the international European ATLAS Group, which fights terrorism. The unit gives the Metropolitan police an essential competence that is sorely needed given its function as an institution that is by its very nature an unarmed one. An elite force, SCO19, and its component parts will continue to play a significant part in maintaining London’s security in an era of oncoming radicalism.
