Ruti, a hyena who resided on the fringes of a major Israeli city, was killed.
On Saturday, a vehicle ran over and killed Ruti the hyena, who resided on the outskirts of the central Israeli city of Modiin and had become something of a celebrity. Her corpse was discovered on Route 443 near the industrial zone of Legal. She was still wearing a collar-mounted radio transmitter.
Ruti was first seen in 2017 as she searched a dumpster for food. The city had expanded into the hyena’s natural habitat. The hyena accrued many fans, but also some people who didn’t approve of her presence. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority captured and relocated her twice, but each time she found her way back home.
