As part of Special Counsel John Durham’s probe into the beginnings of the FBI’s Russia inquiry, Igor Danchenko, a Russian analyst who was a reference for the 2016 dossier of claims against former President Donald Trump, was detained and charged on Thursday for reportedly lying under oath. According to the accusation, he was convicted with five counts of giving false information to the FBI, and each count carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Danchenko was a crucial source of information for former British intelligence operative Christopher Steele’s dossier, which claimed Trump’s candidacy was tainted by ties to Russia. The document, many of whose accusations were never substantiated, became one of the most contentious aspects of the FBI’s “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation into Trump and Russia in 2016, which led to special counsel Robert Mueller’s inquiry.
