Reskilling older workers for new careers in tech | McKinsey

Must Read

Get Ready SG assists older employees in acquiring new skills and remaining engaged in the job field.

According to a recent analysis by Generation, hiring managers incorrectly consider mid-career individuals aged 45 to 60 less talented and employable. Generation, an organization formed by McKinsey, examined more than 1,400 hiring managers and 3,800 job seekers and employees worldwide for its findings. According to research, older workers are rated at or above the same level of job performance as individuals a decade younger. Singapore has a high need for IT personnel, and the government subsidizes training for its residents. The #GetReadySG program begins with a three-month intense tech-specific boot camp and a six-month apprenticeship with a startup.

Syaffi, a recent graduate of the program, had a decade of expertise in publishing when the pandemic forced the closure of his firm. Each student works with a mentor, gets instruction in interview techniques and resume writing, and attends employer networking events. After eight interviews, Syaffi was hired by a consulting business as a developer. Pichaya Deesomsak is a McKinsey fellow who helped the Generation Singapore program and is currently assisting in establishing the agenda for Generation Thailand.
