A US Service Member operating in Africa is given the Purple Heart.
The Purple Heart was presented to US Service Member Master Sgt. Steven Corley, 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) operating in northern Africa: He was injured in January while heading a six-member squad. AFRICOM did not specify Corley’s mission or location at the time, but later did say that a U.S. soldier had been injured when a French base in Mali came under attack. Corley was able to provide to aid and relay vital information to partner and allied forces while wounded. AFRICOM’s Gen. Steven Townsend said in a statement. “Sergeant Corley did what U.S. forces typically do when wounded: stay in the fight until they pass out or are instructed to stand down.”
