A former commander of a top tier Army special operations unit speaking under the condition of anonymity said the American military experience in Afghanistan was a chance to hone skills necessary for future engagements.  He says there was a cost associated with an American presence in Afghanistan and there will be a cost of not being there as well. The primary concern of special operations over the past 20 years was counterterrorism and experts agree that threat is not fully dealt with, but the overall mission will most likely shift to deterring Chinese and Russian aggression. As threats evolve, winning over hearts and minds will be equally as important as tactical proficiency in the coming years.
