Piracy Alert Triggers Successful Operation by Liberian Coast Guard

The Armed Forces of Liberia, through the Liberian Coast Guard, executed a maritime interdiction operation on July 23-24, 2023, in response to a piracy alert from the Sierra Leone Navy. The operation targeted pirates who had seized a Chinese fishing vessel with 23 crew members aboard, including six Chinese and seventeen Sierra Leonean individuals.

1. The piracy incident took place off the coast of Sierra Leone, where the pirates seized the Chinese fishing vessel “F/V Shenghai-2.”
2. The Liberian Coast Guard operation was launched after continuous monitoring and coordination with the Sierra Leone and Cote d’Ivoire navies.
3. The operation lasted for 28 hours at sea, during which the Liberian Coast Guard located and pursued the pirated vessel near the Liberia-Sierra Leone maritime borders.
4. Following an exchange of fire, the Liberian forces captured one pirate and rescued two crew members; after a protracted negotiation and breach into the vessel, they apprehended another pirate and rescued the remaining 21 crew members.
5. The cleared vessel was subsequently brought to the Liberian Coast Guard Base at Bushrod Island for further investigation.
