Pentagon reports high levels of ‘forever chemicals’ in drinking water near bases | The Hill

Must Read

The Department of Defense has confirmed the presence of elevated concentrations of PFAS chemicals in the water around military facilities.

The Defense Department reports that drinking water near military facilities has elevated amounts of hazardous substances. Testing near military facilities in the states of Washington, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Michigan revealed levels substantially over an EPA-established health threshold. Some substances have been related to cancers of the kidney, testicles, and liver. A January water sample at Joint Base Lewis-McChord Yakima Training Center in Washington State had 800 ppt of PFOA. A November sample from Camp Grayling Army Airfield in Michigan had 119 ppt PFAS.

An August sample from the area around Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Florida had 206 pptPFAS. The National Defense Authorization Act for the fiscal year 2022 requires the Department of Defense to publicize the testing.
