Pentagon doesn’t know if it trained Burkina Faso coup leader | Responsible Statecraft

Lt. Col. Sandaogo Damiba, the last person to overthrow the government, was overthrown by Capt. Ibrahim Traore, who may or may not have received intensive training from the Americans.

A military officer who had taken control in a January coup, Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, was overthrown by Captain Ibrahim Traore. According to a formal announcement from last week, Traore was named “Head of State, Supreme Head of the Armed Forces.”

According to U.S. reports, Sandaogo Damiba participated in at least six training exercises with Africa Command before his own coup. Lack of documentation is a major factor in the U.S. military’s uncertainty on whether it mentored the latest coup leader, Ibrahim Traore. At least nine coup attempts have been made by USA trained military officers (and at least eight have been successful) since 2008 in five West African nations, including Burkina Faso (twice), Guinea, Mali (twice), Mauritania, and the Gambia. It is unknown to AFRICOM what happens to the officers after they are trained.
