While it may be tempting to compare the repressive nature of today’s Russian government to Stalin’s of the past, those familiar say the comparison isn’t useful for understanding Putin’s true motives. In late December a Russian court ruled to shut down the group Memorial, an organization dedicated to preserving the memory of Russians who died during the communist regime. Rather than opposing the organization’s core message, Putin was more concerned with the group’s ties to pro-Navalny ideas.
