SOF is transitioning their attention from a strong emphasis on fighting terrorist organizations to a mix of that operation and others that are intended to assist the military’s new focus on integrated deterrence of China.
In terms of generation, SOF presently contains a substantial portion of millennials, and they are beginning to recognize members of Generation Z. Due to the fact that SOF is an intergenerational force, It’s interesting to know how senior special operators view leadership, what young adults expect from their leaders, and how military leadership traits may need to develop to meet the demands of future battlefields. The research at the CNA Corporation is ultimately intended to assist senior special operators in better understanding the requirements of younger SOF, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of various leadership, approaches across generations. As stated by Gen. Richard Clarke in his 2022 congressional posture hearing, SOCOM’s “commitment to high ethical standards, engaged leadership, and maintaining accountability within SOF is critical to sustaining the trust earned over decades.”
