Defense sources told Defense News that a new Pentagon plan to increase small business involvement in defense procurement is in the works for this spring. The Pentagon’s first small business plan since 2019 would come amid a drop in the number of small company contracts awarded, as well as Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s admission that the obstacles to working with his department are too high. According to Farooq Mitha, director of the Department of Defense’s Office of Small Business Programs, the plan will lead to attempts to recruit more non-traditional enterprises, new entrants, and innovators. The policy was announced after Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks vowed to expand small business possibilities.
