Officials from the Mexican Army indicated Tuesday that the additional soldiers stationed in Tijuana would concentrate on lowering killings.
The Mexican Army’s Special Forces landed in Tijuana on Tuesday to fight organized crime and target a particular list of individuals accused of being behind a wave of violence. Tijuana has long been a battlefield for warring gangs vying for control of a direct route for drug trafficking into the United States. For the first time in recent years, killings in the border city fell below 2,000 per year in 2021. However, March was one of the most violent months of 2022, with at least 121 people slain thus far in April. The Mexican Army revealed a list of 115 “most sought” criminals accused of stoking the violence in the border area for the first time on Tuesday. Officials are seeking public assistance in identifying the suspects and reporting their locations.
