Green Berets: The 70th anniversary of the best-trained army force in the world
June 19th celebrates the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the U.S. Army Special Forces, most often known as the Green Berets. Since Fathers day has just passed, it seems appropriate to pay tribute to Col. Aaron Bank, the “father of special forces.” Bank envisioned a force experienced in irregular warfare capable of collaborating with local opposition. He participated in sabotage, guerrilla war, and the recruitment of partisans to combat the Nazis, and continued his fight into Vietnam.
After the war, he advocated for an official Army unit devoted to special operations. Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC) presented a resolution honoring Bank and the Special Forces community just this month.
