Meet the Danish Frogmen who just took down a boat full of pirates in the Atlantic | Business Insider

Must Read

Last November, a Danish frigate, the Esbern Snare, was conducting an anti-piracy patrol off the cost of Nigeria in the Gulf of Guinea when it received reports of suspicious activity nearby. The Esbern Snare sailed towards the area of concern and located the suspicious craft, a small motorboat with nine men aboard shadowing the movements of local merchant vessels. Having identified piracy equipment on the boat, the Esbern Snare deployed a small contingent of Frømandskorpset, the Frogman Corps, on Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats to intercept the craft.

The motorboat was not immediately compliant, shooting at the Danes who were forced to return fire. Four pirates were killed and one was wounded while the Danish equivalent of US Navy SEALs suffered no casualties. The Danish Frømandskorpset receive over 500 applications each year, but only a few graduate, there have been fewer than 400 Frogmen since the group’s inception in 1950. Their training is based on US Navy Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL and the UK Special Boat Service training and selection processes.

As the Danish special operations community is relatively small the Frogmen are responsible for a wide variety of missions but they have earned a reputation for successful anti-piracy operations.
