Discovered in the port of Ribadeo, Spain: A Medieval Boat Used to Transport Pilgrims

The extraordinary discovery apparently served as a means of avoiding a time-consuming land detour by crossing a tidal river. The boat is believed to have been utilized during the pilgrimage to St. James’ shrine along the Route of Santiago de Compostela, one of Jesus Christ’s apostle routes. Carbon dating of the L-shaped part places its construction sometime between 1050 and 1260 AD. According to Javier Arias, the territorial delegate of the Xunta in Lugo, it was found during a search by Spain’s Ministry of Culture, Education, Vocational Training, and Universities. The find, according to him, was “very important.”
