Sgt. Gary Beikrirch passed away on Sunday at the age of 74. During the Vietnam War he earned the Medal of Honor as a medical aidman for actions while serving with Detachment B-24, Company B, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, on April 1, 1970.

Beikrirch’s group was stationed at Camp Dak Seang in Vietnam’s Kontum Province when they faced an enemy ambush. Beikrirch, ignoring the injuries he had sustained in the firefight, repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire treating and retrieving the wounded. He searched and cared for the wounded until he became incapacitated.

President Richard M. Nixon presented Beikirch with the Medal of Honor in 1973 after he was discharged in 1971.
