Prosecutors in the criminal case of a Marine Raider say that the accused deceived his teammate. In the June 4, 2017, strangulation killing of Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar in Bamako, Mali, Gunnery Sgt. Mario A. Madera-Rodriguez stands accused of conspiracy, violence, obstruction of justice, theft, fraudulent official statements, negligent homicide, and felony murder. Three other co-defendants, a Marine Raider, and two Navy SEALs have previously pleaded guilty to charges and been punished for their roles in the tragedy. The only one of the four to get to trial is Madera-Rodriguez. He has entered a not-guilty plea. If found guilty, he may stand life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
