Many American veterans end up in prison. A new law might transform that.
As many struggle to put the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts behind them, activists believe it is imperative to change the trend for the millions of post-9/11 veterans. While serving in Iraq, Tony Miller killed several enemy soldiers and his Army unit took down so many valuable targets that they were given a gallantry award. He was deployed back to Iraq just 17 days after his previous deployment ended. “Violence was rewarded,” Miller said. However, once he left the military in 2008, his hostility was no longer useful, and he was overcome by rage, which was made worse by untreated post-traumatic stress disorder. He faces second-degree assault charges. He was also found guilty of illegal narcotics possession in 2014 after being charged with second-degree assault with a handgun, the repercussions threatened to permanently end any possibility he had of returning to a useful life as a civilian.
