Researchers have discovered the Ironton, a “magnificently preserved” shipwreck that had been lost for over a century in Michigan’s Lake Huron.
The vessel, which sank following a collision in 1894, has been found in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Only two of the ship’s seven-man crew survived the disaster. The ship’s lifeboat, which the crew was unable to detach from the ship, can be seen in eerie new images released after the discovery. Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the state of Michigan and the Ocean Exploration Trust nonprofit teamed up to find the wreckage. The find will contribute to research aimed at protecting Lake Huron and its rich history.
