Leveraging U.S Capital Markets to Support the Future Industrial Network | War on the Rocks

$56 trillion is over three times the size of the United States’ economy. This massive amount of wealth in US capital markets exceeds China’s — $46 trillion in public capitalization and another $10 trillion in private money. 

Using US equity and debt markets would allow the Pentagon to address present capacity gaps, support technical improvements from leading private-sector innovators, invest in generational change efforts across armed services, and replace aging global infrastructure to maintain US forces. The Department of Defense has already demonstrated its ability to respond quickly to national catastrophes. For example, when the COVID-19 pandemic arose, it used its other transaction authority to purchase vaccinations and medicines immediately outside of the conventional contracting process.
