A transmitter site in the nation’s capital, Kigali, desperately needed to be evacuated of seven DW employees and their families caught up in the pandemonium. But rather than German special forces, it was Belgian paratroopers who were successful in extracting the German officials. The top-secret Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK) force was established in the southwest town of Calw in September 1996, marking the beginning of the formation of the elite company that resulted from that insight. It was based on clothing that was comparable in the US and the UK.
