Norwegian defense contractor Kongsberg Discovery has marked a significant achievement with its HUGIN Endurance Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). The 8-ton, 40-foot AUV successfully completed a multi-week mission, operating at depths of up to 3,400 meters and covering 1,200 nautical miles without human intervention or external guidance.
This mission demonstrated the HUGIN Endurance’s ability to navigate independently, returning with an impressive position error of just 0.02% over the total distance traveled. The vehicle also conducted detailed surveys using advanced sonar and imaging technology, confirming its operational endurance and precision.
Launched in 2021, HUGIN Endurance is designed for extended shore-to-shore missions, with a capability of operating for up to 15 days autonomously. This latest milestone reinforces Kongsberg’s reputation as a leader in unmanned underwater technology, supporting both commercial and defense applications.
