Kintsugi: Japan’s ancient art of embracing imperfection | BBC Travel

Must Read

Kintsugi is a 15th-Century art of restoring broken pottery. In a world of quick disposal, kintsugi which means “to join with gold” is a reminder that our battle scars are what make us whole. It takes about three months to complete as the lacquer used is produced from the sap of an indigenous tree in Japan that needs time to be bonded before dusting it with gold. The restored ceramic becomes a symbol of fragility, strength, and beauty and a new way to live sustainably. It’s a reminder of embracing human imperfection and to celebrate our flaws.
