Gary Anderson is a retired Marine Corps colonel who served as a special adviser to the deputy secretary of defense and as a civilian adviser in Iraq and Afghanistan. He recommends that the officers involved in the planning of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan should be as far way from the investigations of the failures in those countries as possible. The most recent defense budget includes provisions for studies of the shortcomings in Afghanistan but the author fears by the time of completion, Afghanistan will have left everyone’s mind.
