Must Read

Security forces have restored order in the main Kazakh city of Almaty after days of unrest and violent clashes between protesters and government forces. The demonstrations began in response to hiked fuel prices but grew to broadly oppose the government and former President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Nazarbayev has the backing of the Russian government and he ordered his troops to use lethal force to stifle the resistance. Dozens have been reported dead and a large amount of damage was done to public buildings. The violence has been characterized as the worst the country has seen in 30 years of independence. Moscow has stated they sent over 70 planes to transport troops into Kazakhstan in order to help secure the country’s main airport which had been taken over by protestors.
