Norway’s Jegertroppen, or Hunter Troop, is the world’s first all-female military special forces unit.
Part of the Norwegian Special Operation Forces (NORSOF), the Hunter Troop specializes in reconnaissance and surveillance in urban areas. The Norwegian Parliament first applied the Equal Opportunity Act to the military in the 1980s, allowing women to conscript, and the need for an all-female unit was raised in 2013. The Norwegian army realized an all-male unit was an operational limitation during their contribution to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. The local customs and religion prevented men from interacting with women, which obstructed the process of intelligence gathering and forging connections with the locals. The Hunter Troop has helped to address these issues and allowed for greater operational flexibility in similar situations.
