The Irish Defense Force’s Army Ranger Wing (ARW) will cease operations in Mali this year. It is understood that conventional forces may take their place and that the ARW might deploy to other parts of the Sahel. The ARW has been in Mali as part of the UN stabilization mission, Minusma. Over a dozen ARW had been stationed in the Malian capital Bamako or Gao conducting long range surveillance patrols of Islamic militants who seek to overthrow the Malian government. Minusma is a French led stabilization effort that originated after the Tuareg rebellion in 2012.
